Extending Terminal Lifespan with High-Performance Plating

Customer Challenges / Request

A device manufacturer encountered a performance issue with the metal terminals built into their equipment. Over time, the terminals experienced increasing contact resistance, eventually leading to measurement failure during testing.
These were not standard pogo pins, but four nickel-plated terminals originally manufactured by the equipment maker. The customer needed a solution to extend their lifespan.

Our Solution

Seiken proposed a custom plating treatment, leveraging the same reliability as our test probes. We first removed the customer’s existing nickel plating using barrel polishing. Then, we applied a new nickel underlayer followed by our probe-grade gold plating, which offers superior durability and contact performance.
This process was tailored specifically to the shape and material of the customer’s terminals, ensuring both compatibility and improved function.

Results & Benefits

Lifespan Extended 3 times: The treated terminals showed a dramatic improvement in durability and contact reliability.

Application

Ideal for semiconductor testing environments, especially when standard components are not used, and contact reliability is critical.

Based on performance results, the customer now regularly orders re-plating services components.
